Chimes of Freedom // Further Adventures of Big Ten
Dave Heumann
What started out as me hearing the Byrds version of Dylan's Chimes of Freedom a year or so ago and thinking that I'd like to learn it, quickly became an obsession. I invited David Bergander to come over to play on a session in my home studio in July of 2025, and one of the songs we did was this one. This was was then worked on more meticulously than I'd like to admit over the course of many months, at times left to sit for a while but always returned to. In the winter of 2026, I invited Walker Teret and Marie Herrington to contribute backing vocals, which they did, separately and remotely, and might I add, awesomely.
I worked on The Further Adventures of Big Ten as a parallel process though I started later. It's a reframing of the 10/4 riff from the Dead's Playin' in the Band, as you'll likely recognize. I recorded the initial guitar tracks in the week following the passing of Bob Weir, and I was thinking about it at the time as being a tribute to David Crosby too, whom Bob credited with coming up with the riff at a jam in Mickey Hart's barn in 1970.
I had David Bergander over again in a separate session in the early spring of 2026 to play some percussion, and he played the tambourine and shakers on Chimes and dumbek on Big Ten. He also played the gong you can lightly hear in Chimes, though that was recorded in the first session back in July.
Thank you for listening. Feel the chimes of freedom sounding in your hearts and we will get there. credits released May 1, 2026
